196 insurgents killed in crackdowns

AT-KABUL: At least 196 armed Taliban fighters were killed and 179 others were wounded in different crackdowns within past 48 hours.

In a press release issued here, Ministry of Defense (MoD) said that Afghan National Army (ANA) in collaboration with Afghan National Police (ANP) and the National Directorate of Security (NDS) has conducted clearance operations against insurgents in different areas of Nangarhar, Kapisa, Nuristan, Kunar, Ghazni, Paktika, Logar, Khost, Maidan Wardak, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Daykundi, Farah, Herat, Baghlan, Sar-e-Pul, Kunduz, Takhar, Helmand and Kabul provinces. In these operations 145 rebels were eliminated and 155 other injured.

Two Taliban commanders, identified as Zahid and Mullah Mistari Ustad, were among the killed insurgents.

MoD said that 12 ANA soldiers were killed due to shelling by the Taliban in different provinces.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Interior in a statement said that 51 Taliban fighters were killed and 24 others wounded in different joint operations in various districts of Takhar, Kunduz, Sar-e-Pul, Jowzjan, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Khost, Paktika, Herat, Ghor and Helmand provinces.

Twenty-one insurgents were also arrested in the crackdowns by ANA and ANP, and were handed over to the relevant judicial body for interrogation, added the statement

ANP and ANA recovered huge cache of weapons in the operations, the ministries claimed.
