300 schoolgirls poisoned in Herat

AT-KABUL: At least 300 more schoolgirls were poisoned on Monday at two different schools in Anjel district of Herat province, said officials.

Spokesman for the Herat Regional Hospital, Rafiq Shirzai, said that 300 schoolgirls were rushed to the hospital after they were poisoned.

He said that the students felt dizzy, vomiting and had headache. They become unconscious after entering into classrooms.

The girls aged between 10 to 17 years and are under treatment in the hospital. The students are feeling better now, he said, adding that girls were students of two different schools including Naween Sufli and Khawaja Abul Walid.

Confirming the incident, the spokesman to the provincial governor, Ehsanullah Hayat, said that still it is unclear that how the students got poisoned. He said that investigation was underway to find out the reason, adding that security has been provided to schools but no arrest was made.

In the past one week this was the fifth time that schoolgirls were poisoned in Herat. Within one week, around 600 students were poisoned.
