$6m spent to release 31 passengers: Ghani

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: After continues condemnations and protest demonstration across the country against the government for being too slow to release the 31 abducted passengers, finally President Ashraf Ghani has broke his silence and said the government has spent $6 million dollars to secure safe release of the abductees.

Talking to Afghan students in Iran, Ghani said the government was neither reluctant nor failed to release the passengers. That’s why we have spent six million US dollars on rescue operations, so far. As many as 69 insurgents were killed in these operations, he added.

“The release of hostages is our top priorities,” he said. However he added that Special Forces efforts to free them have been one of the most intense operation conducted in the past 14-year.

Ghani said that he was personally leading the case and was hoping the kidnapped passengers would be released soon.

A group of militants wearing masks around two months ago kidnapped 31 passengers on Kabul-Kandahar highway in Shah Joy district of Zabul province.
