72 militants killed in Helmand

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: As many as 72 Taliban militants were killed during separate military operations in southern Helmand province, the provincial police said in a statement on Monday.

According to the media statement, the first military operation which was backed by foreign troops was launched in Sangin district. In this operation at least 45 Taliban militants were killed and scores were injured. At least 27 insurgents were killed in the second operation, launched by 215 Maiwand Military Corp in Greshk district.

The statement further said that there were no civilian or security forces casualties during the operations. The statement did not provide more information about the operations.

Helmand is one of the insecure provinces in Afghanistan. Afghan security forces backed by the US air force have conducted scores of operations in response to the Taliban’s attack. The Taliban militants had captured some areas nonetheless the areas were later recaptured.  During these offensives hundreds of Taliban fighters were killed.

However, the militants still return and fight the security forces in the province.
