Afghanistan sentences 21 to prison for Intercontinental Hotel attack

KABUL: The Attorney General Office said Monday that 21 people were sentenced to prison in connection with the last year’s terrorist attack on the landmark hotel of Intercontinental in Kabul, in which about 30 people mostly foreign guests were killed last year.

The Attorney General Office said in a statement that 13 of 21 arrested were personnel of a security company and were sentenced to two to five years in prison over neglecting during duty, while eight others responsible of organizing and carrying out the attack, were sent behind bars for 20 to 30 years.

Taliban claimed responsibility for January 2018 attack.

In that time, The New York Times, citing local sources, reported that 43 people were killed when gunmen laid siege to the upscale hotel in the Afghan capital, but the Afghan Interior Ministry said that 18 people, including 14 foreigners, died.
