Afghanistan to start house-to-house polio vaccination to protect 3.3 million children

A house-t0-house vaccination campaign will begin in Afghanistan to protect millions of children against polio.

In a statement, WHO and UNICEF lauded the Taliban to allow the resumption of the vaccination process to all children in Afghanistan.

The vaccination drive again polio will resume on November 8 and will be the first in three years that reaches entire Afghanistan including 3.3 million children who were previously deprived of the vaccine.

World Health Organization’s representative in Afghanistan Dapeng Luo expressed gratitude over the decision and added that the step is extremely important.

“We know that multiple doses of oral polio vaccine offer the best protection, so we are pleased to see that there is another campaign planned before the end of this year. Sustained access to all children in essential to end polio for good.” Said Luo.

In the meantime, UNICEF representative in Afghanistan said that they are setting out plans with their partners to fully eradicate polio from the country.

WHO officials who convinced the Taliban authorities said that the step is not only crucial for Afghanistan but for the region also as Pakistan is still dealing with polio cases.

The new campaign will vaccinate those aged from 6 years to 59 months.

WHO has called on the local leaders to respect the neutrality of the health system and ensure every child gets vaccinated in their neighborhood.
