Army helicopter destroyed after emergency landing in Helmand

AT-KABUL: An Afghan military helicopter has been destroyed in an airstrike after making an emergency landing in southern Helmand Province, officials said, so that the Taliban will not get their hands on it.

The helicopter from the Afghan security forces made the emergency landing in Yakhchal area of Nahr-e-Saraj district in Helmand on Saturday nightdue to technical problems, according to a Defense Ministry statement on Sunday.

The helicopter was supporting a ground mission in Helmand outskirts. After hitting the ground, all passengers onboard were rescued and the helicopter was destroyed with an aerial bomb involving military helicopters in the area, said the statement.

The Taliban in a statement claimed that its assailants shot down the Afghan forces helicopter, killing all crew onboard.
