Aynak copper mine project security a top priority: MoI

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Security forces will spare no efforts to ensure security of Aynak copper mine in Logar province, said an official in the Ministry of Interior (MoI).

After delay in extraction of Aynak copper mine, contracted with a Chinese firm, President Ashraf Ghani paid a visit to the mine. President Ghani directed security forces to ensure foolproof security of the copper mine.

Sediq Sediqi, spokesman for the MoI, talking to Azadi Radio said that the ministry has taken all necessary measures to ensure better security of the mine.

“Afghan security forces will exert their utmost efforts to ensure security of Aynak copper mine and other national projects,” he ensured.

Sediqi said that the MoI has deployed sufficient troops to ward off security threats to workers of the mine.

Contract of Aynak copper mine was awarded to Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC) in 2008. However, the firm hasn’t started extraction of the mine yet. Extraction of the mine is expected to create 10,000 jobs.

Experts believe that China has close ties with Pakistan and it can pressure the country to sincerely cooperate in the peace process of Afghanistan and pave the ground for the Chinese firm to extract the mine.

“Pakistan has changed its strategy and China will pressure the earlier to pave the ground for extraction of the mine,” said Ishaq Atmar, a political analyst.
