Aziz Haqqani declared as a global terrorist

“Abdul Aziz Haqqani, a top leader of Pakistan-based Haqqani network, has been named as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” by the US”

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL:  The Obama Administration on Tuesday added Abdul Aziz Haqqani, a top leader of Pakistan-based Haqqani network to the list of Special Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) for his involvement in planning and carrying out attacks against Afghanistan. Aziz Haqqani assumed leadership role of the network after the death of his brother Badruddin Haqqani. The United State also announced $5 million as a reward for information leading to the whereabouts of Aziz Haqqani.

Following his inclusion in the SDGT list, the US brought Aziz Haqqani under ambit sanctions where no US national could maintain any relationship with him and also his assets would be seized if he has any in the US , the US State Department said in a press release.  This comes at the same time when Washington publicly sought support for peace talks between Afghan government and the Taliban.

The Haqqani Network was declared as a foreign terrorist organization in September 2012, and the group is operating from Pakistan being considered the most lethal insurgent group targeting foreign and Afghan troops, the press statement added. The Haqqani Network was established in 1970s by Jalaluddin Haqqani, former Afghan Mujahideen commander.

It is worth mentioning that the group conducted several deadly attacks in the country including the 2008 bombing at the Indian embassy in Kabul that killed at least 58 people.
