AT-KABUL: At least 52 people have been killed in a devastating landslide in northeastern Badakhshan province on Tuesday.
Shah Waliullah Adeeb, the governor of Badakhshan province, said the landslide in Khwahan district of the province.
He added that the way to the landslide hit area was covered with snow and the only way to reach the landslide affected people was through helicopters. “We will not be able to reach the district today. We are waiting for helicopters to come tomorrow and take us to the area,” the governor said.
The landslide-hit area is located around 200 kilometers from Faizabad, the capital city of Badkhshan. According to another source in the province the landslide has destroyed more than 100 houses.
Badakhshan is one of the least developed provinces Afghanistan, which is located in Hindu Kush and Pamir mountain ranges and is prone to natural disasters. A landslide in Argo district of the province buried hundreds of people last year.
