Bamyan hosts Afghanistan’s first-ever international marathon

AT-KABUL: Afghanistan hosted its first international marathon the other day with participation of 160 runners from 12 countries.

Athletes from the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany, France and several others country run in the 42 kilometers race in central Bamyan province.

Briton Keith MacIntosh, 41, won the race with a time of 2 hours and 55 minutes. Maclntosh has participated in more than 20 marathons in Europe.

The event was organized by the provincial directorate of information and culture in joint venture with Untamed Borders, an adventure-travel company.

A separate 10-kilometer race was held for local female runners. Nazifa, a 15-year old girl from the province, won the race. She described the experience as unforgettable. Organizers of the event said that the race provided an opportunity to both local and international runners to run together and enjoy the beautiful view of Bamyan province.
