Sri Lanka expresses condolence
AT-KABUL: China has announced relief package for earthquake-affected people in Afghanistan and Pakistan and showed willingness to provide assistance based on needs of the two neighboring countries.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said on Wednesday that the Chinese government would provide relief package to Kabul and Islamabad according to the conditions and their needs. The China’s Red Cross will provide emergency support in cash to the two earthquake-hit countries. According to Lu the China’s Red Cross will provide $100,000 in cash to the Red Crescent Society to each of the two.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a message of condolence to his counterparts in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Lu Kang said that Chinese people have also sympathy and deepest condolence with the Afghan and Pakistani earthquake victims.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan government has expressed condolence to the families affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka in a media statement issued said that the people and government of Sri Lanka was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and destruction to property caused by the devastating earthquake in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan on Monday which also affected parts of India and Pakistan.
The statement said that Sri Lanka stands in support and solidarity with the governments and those affected in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan and wish to convey deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this catastrophic disaster, and to those injured a speedy recovery.
A powerful earthquake, 7.7 in magnitude, struck Afghanistan on Monday, destroying several houses in different provinces. It is fear that casualties likely to increase because some provincial officials had not provided data.
The earthquake rocked Afghanistan at 1:38 p.m. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was said to be Juram district of Badakhshan province at a depth of 213.5 km. The earthquake was able to be felt in the nearby countries of Tajikistan, Pakistan and India. The earthquake lasted for one minute.
