Commandos storm Taliban jail, free 61 prisoners

AT-KABUL: Afghan commando forces on Thursday night raided a Taliban prison in southern Helmand province, releasing 61severely tortured prisoners from captivity, and killing and capturing several militants, Ministry of Defense said on Friday.

MoD spokesperson Brig. Gen. Mohammad Radmaneshsaid commandos stormed a Taliban-held prison in Baba Karez area of Kajaki district and freed prisoners who had severely been tortured.

The commando forces killed two Taliban militants and captured seven alive during the raid. The freed individuals and the detained Taliban had been shifted to the Afghan National Army base in the province.

The Taliban also confirmed their jail had been broken. Their spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said the jail in Karez area was used to keep ordinary criminals. It was broken and 60 people were taken away, he said.

He said two civilian homes and three private vehicles were torched during the security forces operation and four members of a family were arrested.
