Commuters ask govt to bolster up highways security

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Since highways are getting insecure and passengers are being kidnapped, residents of Zabul province called on the government on Sunday to ramp up security measures along leading highways particularly Kabul-Kandahar road.

Commuters face a great threat following a marked surge in militant attacks on passengers on highways, Ajmal Khan a resident, said. The government must forge a comprehensive policy to restore security on highways as soon as it’s possible, Ajmal said. He called on the government to establish more security check posts on highways for safety of passengers.

Another resident, Mohammad Ali said that militants were trying to bring main highways under their control by kidnapping passengers, planting roadside bombs in a bid to accelerate their sabotage activities.

Provincial security officials said that they were capable to ensure security on main highways. Brig. Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Rogh Lewanai, Zabul Police Chief said that recently insurgents had intensified their subversive activities but commuters should travel without any fear as the Afghan security forces have upped efforts to maintain security along highways.
