Deadly mine collapse in Samangan draws condolences

KABUL: Former President, Hamid Karzai offered condolences over the collapse of a coal mine in the northern province of Samangan in which a number of workers died, injured, while some others were trapped inside the mine.

The incident took place Tuesday in the Shabashak area of Dara-e-Soof Bala district.

Karzai wished paradise for the dead, patience for their families and quick recovery for the wounded.

Provincial officials confirmed the death of at least 18 workers. The bodies of eight of them have been recovered.

Sultan Mohammad Sultani, district governor said that the incident happened late Tuesday.
Abdul Qadir Motfi, spokesman at the ministry of mines and petroleum, said their reports showed 16 to 18 were trapped in the mine.
Rescue teams have arrived in the area, but nothing was reported about the fate of those trapped.
“The ministry has ordered its technical and operational teams to rescue the people who have been trapped. We are in contact with our colleagues to assess the incident,” Motfi said.
Most of the mines across the country especially thee coal mines in Samangan are illegally excavated by the locals and powerful gunmen.

Unpleasant incidents take the lives of tens of people every year.
