KABUL: At least eight Afghan soldiers have lost their lives in the line of duty when a number of Taliban insurgents attacked their check post in northern Badakhshan province, local source said.
Another six members of the Afghan security forces received injuries in the attack.
According to some local sources, the militants attacked the security checkpoint on Saturday night in Wardoj district of the province. The militants seized the ammunition and destroyed the checkpoint, the source added.
The Taliban group had confirmed the attack, claiming that eight security forces were killed and 15 others wounded.
The provincial authorities confirmed the attack, but remained silent over the number of casualties and refrained from more details.
Badakhshan is one of the merely secure provinces in the north of Afghanistan. The violence has been raging across the country amid the U.S. preparation for withdrawal. To appear with more leverage on the negotiations table, both the government and Taliban have escalated offensives on the ground.
