Emergency department of Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital renovated

People criticize the health ministry for twisting realities as patients complain of doctors’ neglect

AT-KABUL: Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) renovated the emergency ward of Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital on Wednesday. However, patients termed the inauguration symbolic and alleged that doctors do not pay attention to their problems.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Minister of Public Health Abdul Basir Sarwar said that required machinery was provided to the hospital, besides renovation of 20 rooms at the emergency ward.

The renovation would resolve most of the problems at the emergency ward. The ward administration would be able to receive several patients at a time. Earlier, the emergency ward of the hospital had different problems including lack of emergency rooms, he said.

During interacting with the patients, it was found that many of them are not happy with the ministry’s performance. They termed the renovation of the emergency ward a symbolic step through which the ministry wants to earn good image. For them there is no end in sight to their problems.

Zalmai, who brought his son for surgery at the emergency ward of Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital, told Afghanistan Times the attitude of the doctors was frustrating, as they pay no attention to the patients. “Doctors in the hospital play with sentiments of patients and their relatives. They act like ministers. When I approached a doctor, he referred me to his colleague for help. When I went there, he referred me to another doctor and the game continued. No doctor was ready to attend my son,” he lamented.

Safiullah, a patient at the hospital, told Afghanistan Times that doctors do not respect patients, and think how to earn more money. “Some well-known doctors leave the hospital early for their private clinics. They should work at the hospital until 4:00 pm, but it is not happening. They want to fleece patients at their clinics,” he added.

Responding to the allegations, Abdul Basir Sarwar said that doctors who violate the regulations and play with people’s lives would face the music.

Rejecting the allegations about mismanagement in the hospitals, he warned that if the ministry found a doctor leaving the hospital before 4:00 pm, he would face action.
