EU announces 1.5billion-dollar aid to Afghanistan

AT News

KABUL: The European Union announced an amount of 1.5 billion-dollar humanitarian package to Afghanistan to prevent further economic crisis in the war-torn country.

A part of this fund will go to the neighboring countries of Afghanistan, where hundreds of thousands of people are settled as refugees, fleeing the country’s four-decade-long war.

The money adds 250 million Euros ($288m) to a 300-million-Euro ($346m) sum the EU previously announced for urgent humanitarian needs, a statement said.

The aid was announced by the European Union Chief, Von Der Leyen in a virtual G-20 summit hosted by Italy to discuss Afghanistan’s humanitarian situation.

G-20 is comprised of world’s powerful countries, including the US, EU, China, Turkey, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia and some other countries.

This comes as the UN Secretary-General earlier expressed concerns over a severe humanitarian crisis and the collapse of the economy in Afghanistan ahead of the cold winter.

According to him, 18 million people- half of the country’s population needed urgent humanitarian assistance.
