EU continues to push for cease-fire in Afghanistan

AT News

KABUL: The EU Delegation in agreement with EU Heads of Mission based in Kabul have called for an immediate implementation of a comprehensive and nation-wide humanitarian ceasefire in Afghanistan, in line with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres´ appeal for a stop to armed conflicts.

The COVID-19 pandemic is threatening all Afghans alike, women and men, young and elderly. As the outbreak grows in the next days and weeks, strong safety measures are needed to protect lives at risk.  Continued fighting would make it very difficult to contain the deadly disease, provide medical assistance and distribute international aid, the EU mission said in a statement on Wednesday.

Several conflicting parties around the world have already agreed to observe a ceasefire. Anyone who has the lives and the well-being of the Afghan people at heart, should respond to this call with honesty and as a matter of urgency, it added.

The success of peace in Afghanistan is tied to ongoing peace efforts, where so far did not yield any positive outcome. The U.S. and Taliban had signed a peace agreement on late February to end longest US war in Afghanistan. Taliban were agreed on reduction of violence, however, the period did not last as intensive fighting resumed across the country with further causalities in both sides.

Moreover, the Taliban accused Afghan and US for violating the peace agreement norms, however, US forces in Afghanistan said it has upheld and will continue to uphold terms in the agreement, but said to come to the aid to the Afghan security forces if the Taliban attacked them.
