Ghazni battle takes heavy toll on Taliban

AT News Report-KABUL: The Taliban suffered heavy casualties in recent fighting in southern Ghazni province, as roughly 400 Taliban militants have been killed and injured, said officials on Sunday.

The Taliban had intended overrunning districts in tumultuous Ghazni, but their plans were thwarted as they faced heavy resistance, said new provincial governor Abdul Karim Mateen.

However, Taliban’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied these allegations, saying the Taliban did not suffer heavy casualties in recent Ghazni clashes, rather Afghan forces had suffered more.

But Mateen said that the security forces repelled Taliban attacks every time they staged assaults by render heavy sacrifices. In the midst of firefights, fifty one security personnel were also killed.

Mateen claimed around 400 Taliban have been killed and injured as a result of recent clashes.

Maj. Gen. Shour Gul, commander of the 203rd Tandar Military Corps, said the Taliban planned to overrun Ghazni province but they were unsuccessful.

“The Taliban launched multiple attacks but security forces beaten back their attacks and inflicted them heavy casualties,” he said.

Deputy Police Chief Col. FarydonMashal 19 policemen have been killed and 32 others injured as a result of the Taliban and Security forces clash.

“Military also suffered casualties during recent clashes but they don’t give us information in this regard,” he said.
