AT-KABUL: Heavy fighting is underway between the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) fighters and the Taliban in Naziyan and Dur Baba districts of eastern Nangarhar province, said the Ministry of Defense (MoD).
The MoD in a statement issued on Saturday said that three Taliban commanders have been killed in the clashes. The Taliban designated district chief for Dur Baba district is also among those killed in the clashes, the statement added.
Radio Azadi quoted a number of residents of Nangarhar province as saying that fierce gun battle is underway between ISIS fighters and the Taliban in the above mentioned districts.
A resident of Nanagarhar province said that the fighting between the militant groups have faced local people to many challenges, as they cannot leave their houses.
The acting Governor of Nangarhar, Muhammad Hanif Gerdiwal, confirmed the fighting between two militant groups in the province. “We cannot confirm the presence of ISIS in Nangarhar, as terrorist group frequently change their names and flags. However, we confirm fighting between militant groups in different districts of the province,” he said.
This came at a time that officials recently said the Taliban and ISIS announced Jihad against each other.
