Iran highly likely behind Farah offensive: Pentagon
AT-KABUL: A Pentagon spokesperson has said that Iran is likely behind a fierce Taliban insurgent offensive on western Farah city. More than a thousand Taliban militants brutally assailed Farah city in the west early on Tuesday morning.
U.S. Department of Defense spokesperson Dana White said that Pentagon can’t rule out any involvement of Iran in Farah region. “Iran remains the most destabilizing factor in the Middle East. So no, I don’t think you can ever rule out their mischief,” said White.
The Taliban offensive has faced retaliatory response from the Afghan national defense and security forces. The clashes lasted until Wednesday morning after heavy aerial and ground operations which swept militants out of the city. Farah was declared clear of the Taliban militants on Wednesday. Rebelshad, however, scattered and sprawled in the outskirts.
Late on Wednesday, Farah residents had reported, gunfight resumed in the city after Taliban rebels once again attacked a prison and other government buildings.
