Kabul, Beijing ink MoU on defense cooperation

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Afghanistan and China signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation. The MoU was signed between the acting Minister of Defense Masoom Stankzai and the deputy chief of staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. The Ministry of Defense in a media statement said that the deal was signed during the recent trip of Stankzai to China.

The defense committee of Wolesi Jirga welcomed signing of the deal and said that China can put pressure on Pakistan to end war in Afghanistan.

Fathullah Qaisari, a member of the defense of committee of Wolesi Jirga, said that China should put pressure on Pakistan to put an end to the support that is provided to the Taliban militants against Afghanistan. “If Beijing doesn’t do so, then there is no use of signing such deals,” he added.

In the meantime, a number of political analysts believe that China can play an important role in bringing peace to Afghanistan. Zalmai Wardak, a political analyst, said that China has strong economic relations with Pakistan, thus, the earlier can play an important role in bringing peace and security to Afghanistan.
