“Kabul never supports fencing along Durand Line”

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Afghanistan says it will never put weight behind fencing work along the Durand line, a plan that has taken at hand by Pakistan authority, terming it important to stop militant movement. Afghanistan’s ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal while briefing newsmen in Peshawar, said that Durand Line fencing was not in the interest of either country.

“We are living in the 21st century and there is a need to remove walls rather than build fences,” Zakhilwal said after visiting the UN Voluntary Repatriation Center (VRC) in Chamkani area of Peshawar.

“To eradicate terrorism, there is a need to change policies instead of erecting walls and fences,” he said, while terming dialogue between Kabul and Islamabad important to sort out the long-running spat.

Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa a month ago said that areas in Bajaur and Mohamand agencies being high-threat zones was being fenced to stop militant attacks.

Kabul did not support increasing distance between the Pakhtuns living on both sides, the diplomat said, acknowledging tension between the two countries.
