AT-KABUL: Former President Hamid Karzai has expressed condolences on the sad demise of renowned historian and researcher Dr. Mohammad Hassan Kakar, calling it a “great loss” for the country’s education and culture.
Kakar, 88, died Thursday night in a California hospital. He was living in the United States.
“Regretfully, Dr. Mohammad Hassan Kakar, a great historian, researcher and famous intellectual of Afghanistan passed away due to illness,” Karzai said in a statement.
Kakar had taught in local and foreign universities and has significant research skills and writings.
He had also active part in Afghanistan freedom fighting and put his share in the country’s history and culture development.
Kakar had earlier said that he had tried to find out the resource of Pashtoons in a book he had written titled ‘Pashtoon, Afghan and Afghanistan’.
He had taught at Kabul University and has written several articles about history and language.
