AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Returning from his Middle East tour, US special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad met with President Ghani Saturday morning and briefed him on the outcomes of his roster of meetings with Arab and Pakistani leaders on peace quest.
Khalilzad reiterated US stout commitment to Afghan peace and stability under the leadership of Afghans, said a statement carried by the presidential palace. Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah and Second Vice President Sarwar Danish were in attendance of the meeting, Zamannews reported.
President Ghani extolled Khalilzad’s efforts for peace and welcomed every stride that could lead to reconciliation and lasting peace.
Khalilzad began his 11-day tour on 4th October and visited Afghanistan, Pakistan and other stakeholders in the Middle East in search to broker a peace deal.
Khalilzad was appointed as the US special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation last month to push the Taliban to the negotiating table and end the grilling war in Afghanistan as part of his mission.
On Friday, he met Qatar’s Deputy Premier Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and Minister of Foreign Affairs in Doha and discussed peace and stability in Afghanistan. He sought Qatar’s greater involvement in the Afghan reconciliation process.
Taliban has long sought direct dialogue with the US administration, but denied talks with the Afghan government despite Kabul’s insistence to own and lead any possible talks.
