KABUL: The US special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad on Tuesday met with head of Taliban’s political office Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and Abdul Hakim Haqqani the newly appointed chief negotiator for the insurgent group in the Persian Gulf Arab state of Qatar.
Mohammad Naeem Wardak, Taliban’s newly appointed spokesman for their political office, wrote Tuesday on Twitter that Qatari deputy foreign minister Mohammad bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani was also present in the meeting.
He said that the meeting discussed finalization of prisoner release as well as matter relating to the intra-Afghan talks.
Khalilzad arrived in Qatar on September 4th with the aim of facilitating the intra-Afghan negotiations clarified in the February US-Taliban peace deal.
Not the government of Afghanistan nor the Taliban have said about the exact date of the talks. The government said earlier that all 400 Taliban prisoners were released, but the insurgents reject the report, claiming that the prisoner release process was not final.
