Khalilzad says he is ready to finalize remaining issues with Taliban

KABUL: The US special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad said that his country was ready to finalize the remaining issues of peace talks with the Taliban representatives, but if they “are ready as well”.

“Productive week in Washington, briefed management on where we are and next steps, back on the road again. First stop Doha where we will try and close on remaining issues. We’re ready. Let’s see if the Taliban are as well,” Khalilzad twitted on Wednesday.

This comes as the US state department, said in a statement that Khalilzad’s trip was considered as part of general efforts towards peace process and end of conflicts in Afghanistan.

This would be the ninth round of peace talks between him and Taliban representatives to be held in Qatar’s capital, Doha.

After discussion with the Taliban representatives, the statement said that Khalizad would leave Doha for Kabul to meet with the Afghan officials to discuss peace process and intra Afghan talks.

The Taliban has not expressed any willingness for talks with the Afghan government so far.

President, Ashraf Ghani ‘s spokesman, Sediqi Sediqi has said that the Afghan government took cautious steps toward peace process to prevent the possible threats pose after US troops pull out.

Khalizad made the trips after he met US President Donald Trump on August 16th, where he briefed him about issues on peace negotiations.

Trump has said that the US had held tremendous negotiations with the Taliban and Afghan government.

He has said that US would decrease the number of its troops to less than 13,000 but a notable number of intelligence would be remained.
