Militants release 24 of 27 kidnapped people in Paktia

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: At least two people were killed and six were injured when a group of militants attacked a cricket match in southeastern Paktia province the other day, said an official source.

The source added that the assailants had also kidnapped 27 seven spectators, mostly minors. The provincial police chief, Zalmai Oryakhel, said on Friday that following mediation of tribal elders, the militants released 24 of the 27 kidnapped people.

He added that all the kidnapped people were school children and teachers. “Most of the kidnapped people were minor school children and some of them were teachers,” Oryakhel said.

He added that local elders are talking with the militants to secure release of the remaining three kidnapped persons.
