Missing Afghan airman in US located

VALDOSTA: One of two Afghan student airmen who went missing from Moody Air Force Base last month has been located, officials tell our Atlanta station, WXIA.

Sources with Homeland Security confirm to WXIA’s Jon Shirek that the search is ongoing for the other missing man.

No details were immediately available as to when or where the missing airman was located. Officials also did not confirm which of the two men had been found.

The airmen, Mirwais Kohistani and Shirzad Rohulla, went missing in early December from the Air Force base located near Valdosta, Ga., about 230 miles south of Atlanta. They had been training at the base since February 2015. They were training to learn how to maintain the A-29 Super Tucano, and were on foreign visas. They were slated to head back to Afghanistan after graduation on December 18.

They instead, disappeared, failing to report to duty at the base on December 7. Visas for both men were revoked last month.

An ICE spokesperson confirmed to 11Alive News Wednesday evening that there is still no information and no reason to suspect that the men were ever any threat to US homeland security. It appears they just wanted to remain in the West, and not return to Afghanistan.

The question now, is whether the one who has been located will, in fact, seek political asylum in the US, and whether or not he will help the Feds find the one who is missing.—(13WMAZ)
