“As insecurity has been ravaging, ramping up security along border areas is a must, therefore the ministry believes enlisting tribal elders support will be an effective strategy”

KABUL: The Ministry of Borders and Tribal Affairs (MoBTA) on Saturday said that it will hold jirgas—elders’ councils—in a number of provinces to discuss border protection with tribal elders.

The Borders and Tribal Affairs Minister, Gulab Mangal, said the tribal meetings will be held in Nangarhar, Kunduz and Herat provinces in upcoming 100 days.

“Afghanistan’s tribes have always defended the country and have been in favor of prosperity and development in this war-weary country, therefore we want to share our ideas with them and will use their suggestions in border protection affairs,” he said.

“As insecurity has been ravaging, ramping up security along border areas is a must, therefore the ministry believes enlisting tribal elders support will be an effective strategy,” the minister remarked.

He mentioned that tribal elders have often resolved big problems in their communities and in higher levels, particularly security issues.  “We are committed to focus on bringing reforms in the ministry and will conduct our affairs through a transparent mechanism,” the ministers vowed.

According to him, the ministry will work on four main issues, including elders, border protection and discussion of issues related to the Durand Line, building good relations with tribal.
