Mortar shell blast leaves 4 dead in Kunduz

AT Monitories Desk-KABUL: Four children were killed and 18 others received injuries after a mortar shell exploded in northern Kunduz province, local officials said on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Chahar Dara district, killing four children and wounding seven others, a spokesman for the 808th Spinzar Police Zone said.

Mahfoozullah Akbari told Pajhwok Afghan News that the mortar shell went off in the Qasab village of the district. “The children were playing with the shell.”

This comes as Afghan children are bearing the brunt of the ongoing violence in the country. A recent UN report shows that the death toll among Afghan civilians, especially children has been increased drastically due to widespread violence in the war-hit country.

Moreover, 11 people were slightly wounded when a hand grenade was hurled at them in the Kabul Bandar area of the provincial capital, the police official said.

The incident was triggered by an exchange of harsh words between two drivers. No one has been arrested so far in connection with the grenade attack.

Kunduz once was considered as peacefully province, but in the recent years, insecurity has been rampant, in which once the province was collapsed to the Taliban hands. Though security forces recaptured the province in the shortest time, but the Taliban insurgents sustained heavy financial and property loses to the residents.
