Mortar struck house; injures 11 in Helmand

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: At least 11 civilians including children and women have sustained injuries when a rocket shell struck the residential area in Marja district of Helmand province on late Monday, the official said. The rocket was fired by the Taliban militants during their attack on security checkpoint.

The provincial police spokesman Shah Mahmood Ashina told Xinhua that a rocket shell hit a house in Block-e-Naw area of the Marja district late Monday, leaving at least 11 injured. He said that among the victims there were nine children and two women who were immediately shifted to the district hospital for treatment.

According to the doctors in the hospital, eight victims were discharged after getting medical care but three children who are in critical health conditions are still under treatment.

Helmand is one of the insecure provinces in the country which is considered stronghold of the Taliban. The militants carry their attacks on daily basis. The security forces have been busy to eradicate the militants from the province.

The province is also in media headlines for the poppy cultivation.
