“nearly 1 million displaced countrywide”

KABUL: Nearly one million people have been displaced within past three months as violence lingers across the country, a human watchdog said on Wednesday.

An official of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, Binafsha Yaqobi told a press conference in Kabul that around 158,392 families were displaced in first quarter of the year in 16 of 34 provinces. According to the official, if an estimation ofsix people per a family was made, the tally of the displaced individuals will reach 950,000.

The commission put the number of people left Afghanistan due to ongoing war to five million. The eastern province of Nangarhar is on top for over 2,290 families have been displaced and Urozgan with displacement of 100 families records the less number of displaced people.

The commission conducted a survey that shows 68,1 percent of the displacement was due to the war and violence. 5,2 of people were displaced because of poverty and two percent due to natural disasters incidents.

9,5 percent of the people whom were surveyed, the commission said “have been displaced since past five years.” 34,3 percent of the lost their living materials and goods. The commission called the Taliban violence as a main reason for the displacement. The Afghan security forces are responsible for 9,4 percent of the displacements. Over 52,2 percent of the displaced youths are deprived of education. The commission called for assistance and supportive aids to the displaced people.
