IEC counts challenges
KABUL: Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday expressed concerns over existence of challenges in upcoming elections.
Chief of IEC, Fazel Ahmad Manawi told mediamen that due to insecurity in most areas of the country, he was concerned over forcedly voting by powerful figures for a specific candidate in upcoming presidential elections. Existence of powerful men and tribalism could hamper duties of IEC in polling process.
He said that insecurity, lack of national identity cards and verified list of voters were main problems. “Despite of many problems, we have no choice but to hold presidential elections,” he added.
He said that still locals were not familiar to elections culture and termed democracy as western system. Moreover, women in most of areas are deprived of their fundamental and constitutional right to vote.
He asked the government and civil society to support IEC in holding a transparent election.
He promised that IEC would let no one to create problems during polls.
