Japan, UNDP for vibrant IEC
KABUL: Embassy of Japan and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on Sunday singed an agreement to donate $8.6 million aimed at capacity building of Independent Election Commission (IEC).
Chief of IEC, Fazel Ahmad Manawi, Japanese ambassador, Reiichiro Takahashi and Country Director of UNDP were present to sign the agreement.
Manawi said that the donation would be spent on capacity building of IEC staff, as well as on infrastructures of IEC in nine provinces including Balkh, Kundoz , Bamiyan, Herat, Nangarhar, Paktia and three provincial offices of Daikundi , Jawzjan and Laghman.
He while praising the donation of Japan, said that Japan as major contributor has donated around $86.3 million to IEC since 2001.
Reiichiro Takahashi said that they had supported elections in Afghanistan since 2001. “We hope that this project will help Kabul in conduction free and transparent elections in 2014,” he added.
Country Director of UNDP, Alvaro Rodriguez praised the donation of Japan and said that UN would support transparent elections. The project would support capacity and development of a permanent and independent election administration in Afghanistan.
