Afghan women want Tokyo push socio-economic agenda
KABUL: Afghan women’s rights groups are urging international community, especially Japan, to help promote socio-economic upliftment agenda for underprivileged women -- to empower them to face challenges in the turmoil-hit nation.
Women’s groups want resources channeled to Afghan government be also allocated to promote their development programmes -- such as eliminating violence against females, better protection, education and the implementation of the Family Law.
“Donors and particularly the Japanese government are requested to support national programs for women’s economic empowerment and economical independence.
“Benchmarking donors support to Afghan government based on women participation up to at least 30 percent at all levels of all three branches of the government,” said a statement.
The statement was the recommendations of Women’s Commission of Parliament, Women Activists and Organisations and Ministry of Women’s Affairs, issued collectively weeks ahead of the Tokyo donors conference in Japan in July.
In Tokyo, foreign governments would decide on future funding for Afghanistan’s development , mainly after 2014 when foreign soldiers withdraw from the country.
Rights groups are urging donor countries to leverage on women’s local and national leadership to reach communities for an inclusive reconciliation peace process.
They also urged donors to provide direct funding and engage local women organisations, civil society groups and local non-governmental organisations that can reach Afghan communities in far-flung areas.__ (PAN)
