KABUL: The governor of an eastern Afghan province says suicide bombers and gunmen stormed a government compound overnight, killing 10 people.

Nuristan provincial Gov. Tamim Nuristani says 17 militants launched the attack before dawn. He says suicide bombers blew themselves up at the gate of the compound where police and government officials live in Kamdesh district.

Gunmen then followed, opening fire.

Nuristani says four women who lived in the compound, three police officers and three members of a government-sponsored militia were killed. The fighting ended Friday afternoon when the final attackers were dead.

Kamdesh district is in a mountainous area of the province near the Pakistani border.__AP
