Afghan security forces kill 82 rebels
KABUL: Eighty-two militants were eliminated in different parts of the country over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Interior said on Tuesday. On the other hand, the Taliban claimed killing dozens of Afghan and foreign soldiers.
A statement from the ministry said 82 insurgents were killed, eight injured and four others detained during joint operations by Afghan and the International Security Assistance Force troops in Kabul, Jawzjan, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Maidan Wardak, Logar and Ghazni provinces.
Weapons, ammunitions and motorcycles were also recovered from the militants, added the statement.
Meanwhile, the Taliban said they conducted 67 attacks on Afghan and foreign forces in different provinces -- inflicting casualties on dozens of soldiers and destroying military vehicles.
Rebel spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid also rejected the ministry’s claims, saying that only five fighters were killed and three wounded during clashes with the security personnel.
An insurgent commander was killed along with three associates in a separate operation by Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers in the Qara Bagh district of the southern province of Ghazni.
The commander, Hakim, and his three fighters were killed in Kudol area, said Nazif Sultani, a spokesman for the 203rd Thunder Military Corps.
In an unrelated incident, a teenage girl was killed and her two brothers were injured in a blast in the Nani area of Andar district on Monday, said Sabwoon, the governor’s spokesman. The incident occurred when the girl was carrying grass for her livestock.--(PAN)
