Officials in Balkh asked to declare assets
MAZAR-I-SHARIF: Northern Balkh has become the second province after Kabul where high-ranking officials have been asked to declare their assets, authorities said on Saturday.
To set the process in motion, the Balkh governor was asked to fill out a form detailing his assets, Deputy Director of Anti-Corruption Abdul Razzaq Zalali told a press conference in Mazar-i-Sharif.
He said the president, ministers, their deputies, governors and second-tier public sector officials were included in the process. Officials have to fill out the forms on joining and leaving jobs.
“In the second phase when they leave their jobs, assets of the officials concerned as shown in the forms will be made public through media outlets. In the third phase, a thoroughgoing inquiry into their declaration will be carried out,” he explained.
Zalali hoped bank auditors, the municipality and other government departments would cooperate with them in exposing the assets amassed illegally.
Local officials welcomed the initiative, believing it would help overcome administrative corruption. Deputy Governor Zahir Wahdat told reporters the process had been effective and they would support it.
Provincial council head Fazl Hadeed said he would not rule out corruption in Balkh departments, but its level had been low, compared to other provinces.--(PAN)
