President awarded honorary doctorate
KABUL: President Hamid Karzai on Monday received an honorary doctorate from the Nippon Sports Science University (NSSU) at a ceremony in Tokyo for his services to rebuilding his war-torn country.
National anthems of Afghanistan and Japan were sung, followed by speeches from the senior university officials. Japan’s former prime minister Taro Aso said that peace and stability in Afghanistan had a great value for his nation.
He said President Karzai was awarded the doctorate in recognition of his services and efforts for bringing development and peace to Afghanistan over the past decade.
“We have a lot of respect for President Karzai, who has done a lot to reconstruct his war-devastated country since 2001,” Aso said, hoping the president would be able to stabilise Afghanistan and continue to work for global peace as well.
On the occasion, Karzai referred to the efforts his government had made for the promotion of sports in Afghanistan. He said it was a matter of great honour for him to be awarded a doctorate by a university having a history of 120 years.
He said that Afghanistan and Japan had historic relations and Buddhist relics from the Central Asian country could be seen in Japan’s museums.
Karzai said more than 40 Afghan students were receiving higher education in Japanese universities, urging them to learn Japanese language and imbibe their culture in addition.
“I learned many things from Japanese culture and would use that in Afghanistan’s reconstruction,” the president said, asking his countrymen to eat less and work more like the Japanese to rebuild their war-torn country.--(PAN)
