10 million Afghans are uneducated, says MoE
AT News Report
KABUL: Deputy Minister of Education on Tuesday said that around 10 million people were uneducated in Afghanistan.
Addressing a ceremony titled ‘Role of Media Outlets in Promotion of Literacy’, Deputy Minister of Education, Sarwar Hussaini said that despite launching different literacy programs, still around 10 million of Afghans, aged between 15 to 45 years, were illiterate. The figures show that 67 percent of people are uneducated. We need a joint effort in collaboration with people and media to overcome this challenge.
“Totally, 83 percent of women and around 57 percent of men are illiterate and the remaining had access only to basic education,” he added.
He maintained that MoE in collaboration with its partners was annually providing education to more than 500,000 people through different programs.
“During last decade, media has not played its role in overcoming the challenge of illiteracy among Afghan masses. Hence, we urge them to launch awareness campaigns about literacy programs. Media should encourage public to join literacy programs,” he said.
He claimed that during transition period, the ministry would educate a great number of people through literacy programs. “During past ten years, the ministry provided education to more than three million people nationwide, wherein more than 67 percent of them were women,” he added.
He sought public and media’s support to spread education.
