Floods wash away houses, displace many
KUNDUZ CITY: Hundred of houses and thousands of acres of agriculture land were washed away after the Amu River burst its banks in the Imam Sahib district of northern Kunduz province, officials said on Monday.
The administrative head of Imam Sahib, Amanudin Quraishi, told Pajhwok Afghan News the flooding had displaced hundreds of families and destroyed more than 6,000 acres of agriculture land since the week-long river overflowing.
"Displaced people are living in their relatives’ houses, lacking food items and shelter. The relevant departments should address their problems,'' he added.
Jora Khan, 55, from the Tobrakash village of the district, said: "Floods washed away my three acres of agriculture land along with my house, now we are living with a relative. Whenever water rises in Amu River, it destroys houses and land. I lost everything but managed to rescue my family.''
Another resident Murad, 34, said the flooding destroyed his 1.5 acres of farmland and the water was gushing into his house. "The rising river water is about to destroy my house, but there is nobody out there to help me or build protective walls along the river,'' he lamented.
Provincial Natural Disaster Management Authority head, Mir Aqa Etabar, said they were unable to resolve the problems faced by the victims as the department lacked resources.
He said:"We have nothing in hand but seeking cooperation from donor organisations for food items and shelters to help displaced people; we can't give compensation for crops and houses damaged by the floods.''
Etabar said the department had notified the main office in Kabul to address the plight of the victims. Imam Sahib and some areas of Qala-i-Zal districts are located along Amur River and every year when the water level rises, it causes colossal damage to nearby homes and farmlands.
Residents have been urging the authorities to construct protective walls along the river, but local officials claim it is a huge project that needs plenty of money.--(PAN)
