AT News Report

Deputy of ACCI, Khan Jan Alikozai, while explaining transit challenges to senators in the Upper House, said that still Afghani trucks were not allowed to cross the border of Pakistan to South Asian countries like India. Pakistani government had created a great number of challenges for Afghan traders in this regard.
He said that Afghan traders were deprived of transit rights. Afghani trucks, which carry fresh and dry fruits, carpet and other goods, could not cross Wagha Border to enter into South Asian countries, while Pakistani trucks according to Afghanistan Pakistan Trade Agreement (APTA) were allowed to easily cross border of Afghanistan and enter into Central Asian counties.
“One kilogram Afghani grape is sold for 1.5 US dollars in Peshawar, while if the border was open for Afghani trucks, one kilogram of Afghani grape would be sold for six to seven US dollars in India and other South Asian countries,” he added.
He maintained that nine million tons of Pakistani cement, per annum was crossing Afghan borders to enter Central Asian countries, while even one container of Afghani goods could not cross the borders of Pakistan.
He termed decrease in market of carpet and precious stones main challenge, and said that 90 percent of Afghani carpet was sold under the name of Pakistan.
“Export of a container of precious stones to Hong Kong takes at least two months to enter into Hong Kong markets under the logo of Pakistan,” he added.
He alleged that the government did not have a transparent trade policy with neighbors. The government should prevent Pakistani trucks from entrance into Afghanistan.
He said that Islamabad did not obey the APTA agreement. Afghani trucks were not allowed to enter Karachi and Wesh ports, while it was allowed for Pakistani trucks.
“Hundreds of containers of Afghan traders are stopped in Karachi port, while 25 containers of ghee have been lost there. The police does not cooperate them to find the containers,” he claimed.
He alleged that neighboring countries created obstacles in their business, as Afghani trucks annually pay around $700 million illegal taxes to neighbors.
“At present, 350 wagons of gas have been in Turkmenistan and were not allowed to enter into Afghanistan. Each of the trucks is charged $100,” he added.
