KABUL: President Hamid Karzai presided over a plenary session of the National Security Council (NSC) here on Sunday wherein they discussed different issues, with security on top agenda.
The Head of the Afghan spy agency, the National Directorate of Security (NDS), Rahmatullah Nabil, briefed the council over his recent trip to Tajikistan and meeting with the Tajik president, Imam Ali Rahman. He said that recent unrest sparked by some irresponsible groups and persons in bordering areas of the two countries formed the agenda of his discussions with Tajik officials.
After hearing the briefing report, the council termed stability of the bordering areas a vital job and instructed security officials to spare no efforts in rooting out those groups that cause the unrests and are smuggling drugs in the areas.
The NSC also brought the issue of cigarette import under discussion.
It said that since smoking causes serious health problems so its import should be discouraged by imposing huge duty taxes.
The Chief of Security Staff, Sher Muhammad Karimi, briefed the NSC on cross border shelling from Pakistan.
“The cross border attacks continued for around one year, which resulted in killing hundred, displacing thousands besides financial losses,” he said
In second part of the session, members from the Independent Election Commission (IEC) joined the meeting, wherein the issue of preparations for voters’ registration came under discussion.
