Bamyan farmers eyeing bumper potato yield

BAMYAN CITY: Potato production is expected to increase by 30,000 tonnes this year in central Bamyan province due to favourable weather and the successful control of crop diseases, officials said.

Harvest of the crop had started in Koh Mard district and farmers would begin collecting potatoes in other towns within a month, an agriculture department official told Pajhwok Afghan News.
According to data gathered from cooperatives, on average potato production would reach 170,000 tonnes, compared to last year’s 140,000 tonnes, said Mohammad Ayub, extension manager at the department.
The healthy yield, he added, was due to favorable weather conditions and absence of diseases affecting crop in the province this year.
A farmer of Yakawlang district, Aminullah, said he harvested 21 tonnes of potatoes from his four acres of land in 2011, but expecting to obtain 35 tonnes this year.
However, some growers are concerned about their low farm produce.
Abdul Latif, a farmer in Koh Mard district, said his potato plants were damaged by insects and this season’s output is likely to be affected.
“The agriculture department gave us insecticides but that was not enough for our fields. When I wanted to buy insecticides from the local market, it was too late and had no result,” he added.
Agriculture director Eng. Mohammad Tahir Ataie said one of the reasons for the increase in production was due to the distribution of 40 tractors to farmers by the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) at the beginning of the current solar year.
“If market for potatoes was not available outside the country, such as in Central Asia, farmers would get less benefit,” he said, adding traders should be encouraged to explore foreign markets for their crops. (PAN)
