GHAZNI CITY: Fourteen key commanders were among 284 insurgents killed and another 94 injured in security operations in southern Ghazni province since March this year, police said on Thursday.

The casualties occurred in 128 operations involving Afghan and foreign troops during the period, Ghazni police chief Brig. Gen. Zarawar Zahid told a press conference in Ghazni City, the provincial capital.
Eighty-two rebels were captured alive during the offensives that resulted in the seizure of 412 landmines and 191 weapons and the discovery of three large arms depots. The police chief said the rebels suffered more casualties during the past four months, compared to the same period last year.
Zahid said 10 Afghan soldiers, police and intelligence agents were also killed during the operations. However, he said nothing about the casualties suffered by foreign troops.
About the public uprising against the Taliban in Andar district, the police chief said residents had killed many insurgents, including foreigners, in a short span of time.
He said the government was supportive of the revolt that was spreading to other parts of the province.
The Taliban have so far said nothing about the uprising. The Nawa district has been under their control over the past seven years. (PAN)
