KANDAHAR CITY: Eighteen insurgents were killed and as many captured alive during security operations in southern Kandahar province during the outgoing week, police said on Thursday.

Another two rebels were injured during operations conducted in the provincial capital, Kandahar City, and several districts, deputy police chief Col. Rahmatullah Atrafi told a press conference.
He said three joint, four independent operations, 320 ambushes and 279 patrols were carried out during the week.
The operations resulted in the seizure of 41 landmines, 19 fuses, 2000 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, 11 Kalashnikovs, two pistols, as many machine guns, two rockets with four shells, 40 hand grenades and an explosives-packed tractor.
Atrafi said government forces suffered no casualties during the raids. A police officer fell victim to targeted killing in Kandahar. He said an investigation into the officer’s murder was ongoing.
Atrafi said nine people were arrested in connection with different crimes and cases against them referred to the attorney office. Six people were detained with 42 grams of heroin, 455 kilograms of hashish and 90kg of opium.
Police were making preparations for better security during Eid holidays, he said, asking residents to cooperate with security forces in this regard. “Intelligence, army, border police and public order police will jointly work to ensure better security during Eid.”  (PAN)
