Bamyan declared as SAARC cultural capital for 2015

KABUL: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Monday announced that Afghan historic city of Bamyan has been selected as the first SAARC Cultural Capital for 2015, which would bring more opportunities to the city.
Speaking at a press conference here in Kabul spokesperson of the MoFA, Ahmad Shakib Mustaghni, said officials in South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in their recent meeting decided to declare Bamyan as cultural capital of SAARC for 2015 that would bring more opportunities in different fields to this city.
Mustaghni added the declaration would provide an opportunity for Bamyan to generate considerable cultural, social and economic benefits and could also abet urban regeneration. “As part of the declaration plans dozens of programs and festivals would be launched and organized in Bamyan including cultural exhibitions, customary musical programs and tens of other types of cultural and social programs that would introduce the city in a better manner to the SAARC nations and world” he noted.
Aside from the inaugural and closing ceremonies, exhibitions, seminars, music and dance shows and recitals, arts and crafts workshops, literary festivals, food shows, screening of films and documentaries were being planned for 2015.
G.L.W. Samarasinghe, Director of the Colombo-based SAARC Cultural Centre has said that a series of year-long cultural events with a national but also South Asian dimension will be organized at Bamyan in 2015.
