Parliament impeaches security chief over surge in insecurity

AT-KABUL: Chief of National Directorate of Security,Masom Stanikzai,underwent a questioning of lawmakers in the Lower Houseof the Parliament on Wednesday over an increasing surge in insecurity in Afghanistan.

The lawmakers accused the security chief of failing to foil terrorist activities and shenanigans of terrorist groups in Afghanistan.

National security chief Masom Stanikzai, however, said there were many terrorist groups in Afghanistan and it was impossible to categorically tame them. “However, security forces have arrested hundreds of insurgents linked to Haqqani network, Taliban and Daesh and foiled hundreds of terrorist attacks so far,” he said.

He said eight people had also been arrested in connection with the terrorist attack on the Intercontinental Hotel.

After presenting his arguments to the lawmakers, there was an immediate vote for him, and there were 44 votes of confidence out of 66 total votes.
